Curly: A Playful and Sculptural Dining Table

A Concept by Bean Buro Architects

This concept for a large dining table, aptly named Curly, challenges traditional formal symmetrical tables with its playful and wiggly curves. Designed by Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui and Lorene Faure of Bean Buro Architects, Curly aims to create a central piece that not only adds visual interest but also enhances social dynamics in interior spaces.

The inspiration for Curly comes from traditional Chinese garden theories, where carefully sculpted forms appear organic and natural, yet serve precise functions. Placing such a sophisticatedly sculpted furniture in the center of an environment goes beyond being eye candy; it increases one's intuition and interaction with the space.

What sets Curly apart from other dining tables is its unique shape and the careful consideration given to seating positions. At first glance, the curves may seem random, but each one has been meticulously designed to encourage a variety of seating arrangements. From small clusters of a few people to one large party of eighteen, Curly celebrates playfulness and increases social dynamics.

The table shape was digitally designed using CAD and 3D modeling software, allowing for simulations of various seating arrangements. The curvy table top is fabricated in marble using CNC laser-cut techniques, while the strengthened steel table legs provide sturdy support.

Technical specifications of Curly include a glossy marble tabletop consisting of three layers at 19mm thickness. The table base is made up of MDF panels finished in durable high gloss paint. The overall size of the table is 5000mm x 1500mm, standing at a height of 720mm. The stacked MDF panels have inner vertical steel rods for reinforcement.

Curly encourages users to arrange their own chairs around a part of the table for a small party, while another party can simultaneously use the table. The shared table surface fosters conversations between users and even strangers, thanks to the playful curves that create a sense of informality and relaxation. For larger gatherings, eighteen people can sit around the entire table, creating a full and extravagant event.

Although Curly is currently at the concept stage and has not been prototyped or constructed, it represents a wider research agenda of furniture installation works by Bean Buro Architects. The project aims to investigate the spatial effects on social relationships caused by a furniture installation in a fixed setting, as well as subvert the strict traditions of user and object relationships through subtle changes to the form of furniture.

The main design challenge in creating Curly was to ensure that the curves of the dining table form did not compromise user ergonomics while staging potential social effects and encouraging conversations. By breaking down the boundaries of traditional formal dining tables, Curly offers a unique and engaging experience for users.

Curly, with its sculptural and playful design, stands out as a central element in any interior setting. Its carefully designed curves and focus on social interaction make it a truly unique and innovative piece of furniture.
